Why We Spent 9 Months Developing a Hempseed Oil Fishing Lure
Every angler knows the feeling.
You're on the water. Conditions look perfect. You've got a full tackle box — every color, every size, every style. And you're getting nothing. Not even a nibble.
That frustration is what started Deadly Lures. And it's what drove us to spend nine months developing something the fishing world had never seen before.
The Problem With Traditional Soft Plastics
Soft plastic lures have been around for decades. They work — sometimes. But they all share the same fundamental limitation: they rely entirely on visual appeal and action in the water to attract fish. Once a fish gets close, there's nothing else pulling it in. No scent. No natural trigger. Just plastic.
We knew fish use more than their eyes. They're highly sensitive to scent and chemical signals in the water. So why weren't lures designed to take advantage of that?
The Idea: Hempseed Oil
Hempseed oil has a unique natural scent profile and chemical composition that fish respond to. It's been used in bait fishing for years in various forms — but nobody had ever successfully infused it into a soft plastic lure in a way that was effective and lasting.
That became our mission.
Nine Months of Development
We didn't rush it. We could have released something in month two or three — but it wouldn't have been right. The oil would dissipate too quickly. The plastic properties would be compromised. The performance wouldn't be there.
So we kept testing. We refined the process. We went back to the drawing board more times than we'd like to admit. We tested on real water, in real conditions, chasing real fish.
After nine months, we had it: Canna-Lure.
What Is Canna-Lure?
Canna-Lure is our proprietary, multi-step process of infusing hempseed oil directly into the soft plastic material of every lure we make. It's not a spray. It's not a dip. It's not a coating that washes off after a few casts.
The hempseed oil is built into the lure itself.
The results speak for themselves:
- More bites, more activity — Anglers consistently report more strikes and more fish activity around Canna-Lure lures compared to traditional plastics. The natural scent profile triggers a response that visual lures alone can't match.
- Superior durability and flexibility — The infusion process actually enhances the physical properties of the soft plastic, giving our lures better action in the water and the toughness to survive multiple catches.
- Performance that lasts — Because the hempseed oil is integrated into the material rather than applied to the surface, it doesn't wash away. Cast after cast, the scent profile remains active.
Made in North Carolina. Tested on Real Water.
Every Deadly Lure is handcrafted right here in North Carolina. We don't outsource. We don't cut corners. Every batch goes through the Canna-Lure process in-house, and every lure is held to the standard we'd hold our own gear to — because we fish with these too.
Our founder grew up fishing. Military family, rod in hand from the time he could hold one. Annual trips to Canada with his grandfather and their hunting and fishing club — sometimes 30 trucks deep, loaded with boats and the kind of camaraderie that only happens on the water. Fishing isn't a business to us. It's personal.
That's why we spent nine months getting this right instead of rushing something to market.
The Result
The fishing lure market is crowded. We know that. There are hundreds of brands competing for space in your tackle box.
We're not asking you to take our word for it. We're asking you to try a lure that was built differently — from the ground up, with one goal in mind:
Get you more bites. Period.
That's the Canna-Lure difference. That's Deadly Lures.
